This is a program designed to support students through their fifth grade year at SSES. It is not offered every year. The goals of this group are to help the children in the group plan for the year, both academically and behaviorally, and, with parent support, their progress is closely monitored.
Here is a brief summary of “Operation Graduation”:
* Each of the students is assigned a “sponsor” staff member. This sponsor will meet with their assigned child to develop an action plan for success for the year. The sponsor will also meet with their child each quarter (or more often, as needed) to update the action plan.
* Each student will be assigned a “Hand in Hand” buddy.
* Mrs. Carver will meet with these students in small groups in her office every other week for the entire school year. The groups meet during lunch times so no academic classes will be affected. At these group meetings we will be using a program called “Positive Action,” along with other resources, to introduce and teach positive social skills and self-esteem. We will also discuss their academic and behavior successes and needs. Students are taught about empathy, decision making, goal setting, and how their brains work. Mrs. Carver needs parent permission for children to participate in these groups.
